Prostate Medicine: Choosing the Best Treatment Regimen
For the patient with prostate cancer there is no one
way to treat the disease. Each person will have there own set of needs
depending on the grade and stage of the cancer. If the cancer is caught
early enough aggressive treatment may not be necessary and chances of a
successful outcome are high. The prostate medicine treatment options for
a man whose cancer has metastasized are much more aggressive then
someone with early stage disease. Unfortunately once prostate cancer has
metastasized chances of successful treatment and recovery are greatly
diminished.
For a man with prostate cancer treating and managing the disease can be
an overwhelming task. There will normally be more than one doctor
involved and his team of doctors can include an Urologist who
specializes in prostate medicine, a Radiation oncologist, a medical
Oncologist, and if surgery is needed a surgeon who specializes in
prostate surgery. These group of doctors would work closely with the
patient to watch the progression of his cancer and treatment and
determine whether or not new treatments need to be used if the current
regimen is not working up to their standards.
If a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer or benign prostatic
hyperplasia it is in his best interest to learn as much about either
condition as possible so that he can make informed decisions when it
comes to the different treatment options available for prostate disease.
Listening to his doctors and other specialists is key to obtaining the
treatment that is right for each individual.
Prostate medicine is a specialized field where there are many fields of
thought when it comes to diagnosing and treating the different diseases
that affect the prostate gland. While this gives men more options to
choose from it can also get confusing trying to decide which option is
best for each individual man. Finding a doctor or specialist that one
can trust is important with this or any other type of medical condition.
The therapy options for prostate cancer are many and varied and can be
used alone or in conjunction with one another. Removal of the prostate
with surgery is the first option; radiation therapy can also be used to
kill cancerous prostate cells and any metastasized cells in the
surrounding area; Chemotherapy can be used to kill cancer cells and keep
them from metastasizing. There are also hormone therapies that can be
used with these for mentioned treatments. Again, it will come down to
the stage and grade of the cancer and how far it has metastasized that
will determine which regimen of treatments will work best. |
